A mother's answer
to a missing mirror

My name is Poovi Kpodar. I'm a Togolese mother, creator, and educator and I built Sankofa Little Light because I couldn't find what my children needed on the shelves.

When I looked for learning resources that truly reflected African heritage, beautiful, joyful, and culturally grounded, I found very little. Generic images. Surface-level content. Nothing that made my children feel seen in the fullness of who they are.

So I made it myself. One printable at a time, one story at a time, one morning of culture at a time. What began as a personal project is growing into a brand for families who want to do the same quiet, daily work of raising children who know where they come from.

What is Sankofa?

Sankofa is an Akan word from Ghana. It means "go back and get it" — the idea that we must look to the past to move wisely into the future.

The Sankofa symbol, often depicted as a bird looking backward while moving forward, reminds us that our heritage is not something to leave behind. It is something to carry. To celebrate. To pass on.

That's what Sankofa Little Light is built on: the belief that African heritage deserves a permanent place in children's everyday learning, not as a special occasion, but as a daily source of pride.
